da imperador bet: In light of the launch of the new football gaming phenomenon that is ‘Goaldash’ I decided to look at the six best Manchester United V Arsenal clashes in recent years.
This weekend sees one of the fiercest rivalries in the Premier League as Arsenal travel to Old Trafford and the match-up always entertains on and off the pitch. With previous encounters offering punch-ups, on-field brawls, food-fights and of course many many goals. To mark the occasion we look back at the top six recent meetings between the two sides.
1. Manchester United 6-1 Arsenal – Premier League 2001
In the 2000/01 season Manchester United collected a hat-trick of Premier League titles, with an impressive victory over the Gunners. United’s striker Dwight Yorke made an emphatic return to the team, scoring three goals. He had given United the lead before Thierry Henry equalised but then United ran riot taking a 5-1 lead into the break. Yorke’s treble plus goals from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Roy Keane and Teddy Sheringham made it 6-1, and gave a clear indication of United’s class.

2.Manchester United 2-0 Arsenal – Premier League 2004
The game which ended Arsenal’s record-breaking 49-game unbeaten run in the league and was later dubbed as the ‘Battle of the Buffet.’ The Gunners arrived aiming to reach 50 league games unbeaten but a penalty from Van Nistelrooy and a late Rooney goal ended their run. As the players headed down the tunnel after the final whistle, there was a heated exchange which carried on into the post-match area and a variety of food was thrown.
3.Manchester United 0-1 Arsenal, Premier League 1998
During Arsene Wenger’s first full season in charge in 1997/98, the Frenchman led the club to the league and FA Cup double, and the main moment in their title win came as they faced United at Old Trafford in March 1998 in what was effectively a title-decider.The match was settled with 11 minutes to go as Arsenal winger Marc Overmars fired the ball between Peter Schmeichel’s legs. The win helped Arsenal overhaul United’s 11 point lead at the top of the table picking up their first title since 1991

4.Manchester United 0-1 Arsenal – Premier League 2002
Arsenal clinched the Premier League title having won the FA Cup a few days earlier against Chelsea and completed a League and Cup double thanks to a solitary goal from Sylvain Wiltord. Ljungberg’s shot was parried into the path of Wiltord who made no mistake from close range, keeping up Arsenal’s record of scoring in every league match that season and ended United’s quest for a fourth successive Championship.
5. Arsenal 3-2 Manchester United – Premier League 1997
Early in their 1997-98 title-winning season, Arsenal hosted United at Highbury. In the first-half a young Anelka gave Arsenal the lead and Vieira made it 2-0 with a superb drive which went in off the bar. However before half-time a Teddy Sheringham brace cancelled out the lead. At 2-2 late in the second-half a David Platt header won the game for the Gunners and ultimately the title.
6. Arsenal 1-2 Manchester United – FA Cup Semi-Final replay 1999
In the last ever FA Cup Semi-Final replay David Beckham gave United the lead in the 17th minute with a bending shot but Arsenal leveled after the break through a Dennis Bergkamp’s strike. Roy Keane was sent off for a second bookable offence after fouling Marc Overmars and Arsenal made the most of the advantage and were handed a golden opportunity when Phil Neville conceded a last-minute penalty. Bergkamp stepped up but saw his spot-kick saved by Schmeichel and the game went to extra time. Five minutes into the second period of extra-time substitute Ryan Giggs picked up the ball in his own half and set off on an unbelievable fifty yard run. Dribbling past four Arsenal defenders, Giggs entered the penalty area and rifled an angled shot high into the net and United held on to their 2-1 lead and went on to win the treble.
