da betway: With the halfway point of the season fast approaching and all areas of the table looking as tight as ever, it is time for teams to face up to some brutal truths about where they are likely to end up come May. For some, they knew they’d be there from the very start of the season, for others, European aspirations have disintegrated into a possible fight for survival.
da bet7k: Probable Relegation candidates;
West Ham
One look at the table shows you West Ham are in a bit of trouble. Having picked up only their second win of the season against Wigan last weekend, swiftly followed by a fairly inexplicable victory over Manchester United in the Carling Cup, things seemed to be looking up for the Hammers, but after a lacklustre attacking performance against a well-organised Sunderland side, it seems as if it may be back to the drawing board, combined with a flurry of activity in the transfer market if West Ham are to get themselves out of their current predicament.
Wolves
Having only won one game out of their last six, Wolves find themselves off the bottom, only on goals scored, and although they are not playing particularly bad football, they cannot seem to get themselves out of the drop zone. If they continue to play the way they have been, surely their fortunes will change, but I can’t see it coming soon enough to steer them clear of a relegation dogfight.
Wigan
In a league punctuated with inconsistency, Wigan must surely be near the top of that particular table. Unfortunately, in the actual table they find themselves in the relegation zone, and this is not helped by their inconsistent form. Decent results against Tottenham and Liverpool have been combined with atrocious performances against the likes of West Ham and Blackpool, and giving their fellow relegation candidates points will not serve them well come the end of the season.
Blackpool
As much as I love to watch Blackpool play, they are nowhere near safe, and find themselves only 4 points clear of the relegation zone. The back end of the season is traditionally a lot more difficult for promoted sides (I’m thinking of Hull and Burnley in recent years) so as the surprise wears off, the season will become more difficult, and when if they have their backs to the wall come April/May, it will be interesting to see whether they persist with their all out attack approach.
Newcastle
I include Newcastle with trepidation, and wouldn’t have given them a thought until Monday’s events, but having sacked Chris Hughton, I can’t help thinking they might just get dragged into the mire. A new appointment must be shrewd and forthcoming if Newcastle aren’t to suffer from a very bad hangover having lost the man who guided them back into the Premiership and the relative safety of mid-table.
Possible Relegation candidates;
Aston Villa
After the turmoil that the club found itself in during the summer subsequent to the departure of Martin O’Neill, Aston Villa have never really recovered, and although never seriously considered relegation candidates, it may become a distinct possibility in the very near future if their fortunes don’t change. Injuries and a young squad don’t help, but results need to change, and fast.
Everton
Like Villa, Everton are another team where serious considerations of relegation are never addressed, but they may well have to be soon, as a team full of potential is not fulfilling their promise. After scoring 2 goals in the dying seconds against Manchester United to level the scores at Goodison Park earlier in the season, it looked as though the Toffees had turned the corner, but after 16 games, Everton remain only 2 points off the drop zone.
